The Captain
Someone that I look up to, and greatly admire, is none other than–Captain Kathryn Janeway.
For those of you that have seen and watched Star Trek: Voyager, this probably doesn't come as much of a surprise. She is truly a wonderful character, in far more ways than one.
However, I look up to Captain Janeway for one main reason. That reason being that I felt that she showed how despite the worst of circumstances may come, no matter how much you might lose, or how harsh your environment may become, you don't give in. To me, she showed an immense amount of strength in the worst of times, even through the episodes that were literally titled "Year of Hell."
But at the same time, she was able to show compassion to some that could be called her worst enemies. Such as, the Hirogen. Yet, never once giving quarter to anything that might have given them quarter over her and her crew.
Janeway was the one captain in the Star Trek universe that actually held her ground against Q. Now, I don't mean in the same sense as how Picard would put up with him, or how Sisko demanded he leave DS9. No. Janeway as a matter of fact, never let Q take an inch more than she was willing to give. (Which was none)
Janeway was a brave and very wise captain, managing to merge two crews into one, and maintaining her own moral code alongside that of the crews. To keep two crews one opposite sides of the spectrum working well for 7 years, and not once letting any other races make them inferior, is not a menial task.
While those around her dealt with relationships, and previous histories of relationships among the crew, she in the end did come to find herself capable without one. Not to say that they didn't come up in the show, but in the end you do see that despite all of them ending with her and the crew of Voyager going on their way, she never once relinquished her own ability to lead. To lead a crew that has to look up to your guidance and leadership for 7 years, all the while not even being altogether certain that you will make it home, is something not for the weak of heart or mind.
Janeway is a very bold woman who doesn't let the enemy dictate the rules or the positions of her and her crew. She doesn't let anyone say that she is inferior to them, because she knows that in all truthfulness, that all are equal.
To show compassion in the harshest of environments, and solidarity in the most unstable of times is a quality only known to the Star Fleet Captains, and I that I feel is perfectly performed by the Captain.
Call her incapable once, and she'll show you do the door. But be cautious with your words. While you might call her incapable, she knows that there's a difference between ignorance, and innocence. She will admit openly to being unknowledgeable about a culture, but she asks for a chance to learn so that she may better interact with those people that she has met, and to better know them. If she does offend, she apologizes, letting them know clearly that she was unaware of the customs or the borders that exist in the Delta Quadrant.
All in all. I applaude Janeway for her never failing spirit. To bring two crews home, and to suffer minimal losses, is something that even many of the Star Fleet Generals, became envious of.
Her ability to be gentle yet in command, is a delicate blend that she was the master of.
