Small Pleasures

I had to unpack about a box of my books that were tucked away for a long while so my parents could have my copy of Narnia for reference, and I feel suddenly very happy to have small stacks of books around my room again.

The Writer's Book Tag

Hello there, Readers!  A brand new month is upon us, and I'm going to be doing my best to write even though NaNoWriMo has finished. With that in mind: it's my goal to try and blog at least once a week, with Sunday being day 1. I know I've tried this before and failed, and a bi-weekly as well. But I ended up worrying too much about what you all would or wouldn't like to read.  In short, I'm just going to post what I know I like talking about. Simple as that. (I don't know why I take so long to grasp simple concepts, honestly :P)  Via another blogger I follow, she said at the end of her blog post that anyone was allowed to say that they had been tagged by her. The fabulous  Hannah Heath !  Let's get started! The Writer's Book Tag: Books I Love, Hate, and Couldn't Care Less About. First Draft:  A book or series that you've never read before. The Mouse That Glowed.  I really should start reading this book. It has been sitting on...

Books and Dreams

Hey guys! For those of you that love, adore, or even just simply like books, I hope this will be the thing for you!  Books are a passion of mine, they always have been, even during the slumps when it seems impossible to find any good new ones.  But they're also something that never failed to be in my life, from before I can remember, to the present.   Write what you know. Well, what do I know? I know books. I should say, I know of them. Many books far and wide have come and gone in my life, some stayed in a special place in my heart, while others have passed on from memory. But to those that come into my life long enough to stay and read, why those are the ones I wish to address, maybe permanently?  I wish to write about the books I read, perhaps give an opinion or a suggested audience to those who are also in search of a good read.  Now, while I don't plan on doing this often, starting at once every month to get the hang of things, I do plan on doin...

I'm going on an adventure!

That's to say, I hope we all are! Who here doesn't like books?  If you said me, well my friend, you will learn.   I don't say that to be mean or creepy, no no no! I say it to say, you don't know what it is you are missing.  My love of books began before I could even read. But the day that I learned how, though, I remember that vividly. I was three years old, and I remember the book that my mom used to teach me how to read. Thus, the family's next bookworm was born. (Have you ever heard the term bookdragon instead of bookworm? It's kind of interesting, but I do love a good classic.)  Books ever since then have accompanied me through time. Good times, bad times, fast times, slow times, busy times and quiet times. All of this, and still it can happen that one can either A) Continue searching for more books, or B) Run out of books that fill you up inside.  'A' happened for a long time, but gradually it seemed that no matter what I looked for or pulle...

Short Story: Prompted

This short story was prompted by three things, but not all taken exactly.  What is the opposite of a kiss?   Breakfast dates.  Start with a word randomly selected from the dictionary.  -Waffle House- "I know!" He yelled. "If you'd known you wouldn't have gone in there, you idiot!" She yelled back. "Oi, guys, can you two bring it down a notch. My parents are still upstairs." Miles pleaded. Stephan, Avery and Miles along with two dogs and a cat were hanging out in the basement of Miles's parents house. Aside from it being 2 am. and the fact that they were all hyped up on soda's and pizza it had been a relatively smooth night so far. Now all Miles could think about was how the next time they all got together he was making sure he brought caffeine free drinks.  Stephan and Avery were hashing each other out in loud whispers while Miles was nodding off on the couch surrounded by his three pets.  He decided to leave them to it, they...

Blank

I'm scared. I'm scared of the blank page. Staring back at me. I'm scared of the words that could cease to be. I'm scared. I'm scared of the open book. Of that first look. I'm scared of the open page. Staring openly back at me. I'm scared...                                     ... but why should I be? I see; the open page, and brand new opportunities. I see; the unwritten word, and breathing seas. I see, and entire new world; open, and staring back at me. But why am I afraid? I'm not. Are you? No. Why? Because, I have no reason to be. I do not fear the open page, the piece so blank and unscathed. I do not fear the words, should they come near. I do not fear. Do you hear me? I do not fear. No open page, or shallow book, no rippling river, no babbling brook. I fear no blank page, then what is it, that you fear? Nothing. That's the point. Don't you get it? ...

Word of the Day: A Poem

Dapper and sonder, Whither and wander, Here or there, and still further ne'er. Words that please the mind, and sounds that roll from tongue. Sound so beautiful and blissful, I cannot fathom mine. Tell me your favorite word, and I shall tell you mine, so long as I am not left breathless, in the wake, of your mind. Word of the Day: A Poem©Mae Fort

Word of the Day

Zephyr : 1) a soft gentle breeze.  2) a fine cotton gingham.  2b) a very light article of clothing.

Word of the Day

Maelstrom : a powerful, often violent whirlpool. A whirlpool in the sea or river.

Come sit with me.

Oh me, oh my, is anyone still awake? The hum of life and cricket crows, Of hummingbirds and daffodils, and lilac flower grows. Of times of tot and tittle tee, of laughing days, just you and me. Oh me, oh my, is anyone still awake? I sit here and wonder, just where I would dare to wander. Where I would choose to grow, if not for one and simple crow. Oh me, oh my, is anyone awake? Where the world goes, and where the world blows, let the simple shining truth, come out once more, out from under this old roof. Oh me, oh my, is anyone awake? There's a story and a thing yet to be told, and once again I'm not certain where it goes. I just move along with the words, to go wherever it is that they may flow. Oh me, oh my, isn't this a sight? My heart yearns for things unseen, and deep within the valley lay, a silver bay, and sunset gleam. Oh me, oh my, is anyone still awake? Come sit a...

New Month, New Look!

Hopefully, you've noticed that I changed both the name and look of my blog. But fear not, it is still the same!  While it's last name was 'A Touch of Euphoria' it had actually begun to wear on me some, despite the fact that I do love the candy like appearance of the last design.  'Bluebirds and Birch trees' is a name that came to me most recently, and I decided to give it a try. I hope you enjoy it too!  So a few things to talk about in the light of the new month:   NaNoWriMo 2016 has ended. Although saddening, it has finally reached the last day, as well as the first day of the month.  Many of my friends and a few of my readers did complete the 50 thousand word goal, set upon in the early hours of November 1st. Though now, we welcome in the beginning of a new month, and a new season. December is full, full of people and editing as well as scrambling gift giving as people like me do their best to try and figure out just what to get their friends and fam...

I like it like this

I think I like living like this; with my knitting and my books, and a good cup of tea.  None to complicated, as it's just me.  I like living like this; with my blankets all around me.  Snuggled up and warm, as it should be.  I like it like this, all fuzzy and calm.  I like like this, in the blistery morning  Mae Fort©

Day 7: 18 M & M's

Not being able to find a satisfactory breakfast is starting to become a bit of a habitual thing. As I am endeavoring to not eat gluten for every meal, it brings breakfast options down to one thing: eggs.  But, as I am not inclined to cook for myself every morning, I am resorting to the large cache of leftover halloween candy. This morning's choice; a package of M & M's that held 18 pieces.  Ordinarily I wouldn't recommend candy to start off the day, but chocolate does go so well with coffee.  Today marks one week for NaNoWriMo. I myself have already written plenty of words, and I do hope at least some of them are good. Because, as with all first drafts, you have to have some room to maneuver.  I've been thinking again about the Book Room Challenge. I find it very interesting at the different styles at which different writers approach the challenge. Some focus on the mood or tone of the room, describing the music you'd hear, or the types of lighting, thi...

The Book Room Challenge

As I was challenged by my friend, Rubix from over at  {The Sea Calls Us Home} , to do the Book Room Challenge. Alright then, Ruby, we'll see just where it gets us!   Rules Write three of your own books as rooms. They can be finished, works in progress, or even just ideas, but they have to be your own. Write one of your favorite books to read as a room. Tag five other people. Well then, off we go!   Coffee Rings An old and weather beaten hardwood floor, the finish long worn off from the scrapes and gouges of many dancing shoes. A tall set of glistening french doors with long and flowing curtains, opening out on to a balcony, with a swirling iron rail. A long forgotten smell is haunting around the room, aside from one thing. With a peeling side table in one corner, and a simple mirror above, a white and perfectly new vase is on the table, with several pale roses standing tall. Tall, yet alone. The room has been abandoned, and the feeling with it, for...

Not a challenge, but an exercise.

This is a post about---If you had three words to describe yourself (a color, a sound, a word of your choice) what would they be? As asked by Mandy, from NaNoWriMo. Mine: Lavender, Birds, Searching. It's color of my hands as I sit here and watch. The feeling that I have when I'm bundled up all soft. The feeling of the wind as it runs through my hair, it's the crisp morning air as I whisper, and ne'er. How do I look when the water turns cold, yet it's the beauty that I see when the heather is foretold. The sense that I feel when the light is not yet dawned, it's the time of the day when it is not quite beyond. The color in this place of time, that I find to be, lavender. The sound when morning is just a frond, the paleness of the plants and growing tendrils. The glittering notes that you hear just outside. It's clear, yet soft, but it's enough. To make the world sound so near. The sound of birds. Restless, yet inviting. Searching, and enticing....

Pre-foreshadowing, it's a thing!

So once again I fail to post anything relevant to writing, or work on any of my drafted posts; especially the one on villains. That one I am very excited for even though it's long, and I hope it goes over well.  It's almost April, and Camp NaNoWriMo is on it's way! I'm in a cabin with 9 others from the Christian Teens Together forum on NaNoWriMo. It's looking to be a very interesting and hopefully lively year! (For writing at least, I'm not so sure about some of the characters when it comes to the lively bit... what can you say? We're writers!) I will say this much, this novel is looking to be very different compared to many of my other stories, main thing being: I wish to break social norms.  Romance is not dead. Love is not dead. Don't mistake lust for either of the aforementioned.  I will let this spoiler out of my novel; it will not contain a love triangle. Not only do I hate it when they are introduced to a novel without any rhyme or reason, bu...

It's called a typewriter for a reason

I spent the past half hour or so cleaning my typewriter. Yes, they still exist. I own one because I am a particularly happy person with a love of vintage things. And while it might not be what many or most consider the "perfect vintage" typewriter, it's a typewriter for crying out loud! IT'S AWESOME. No it's not baby blue, or that strange shade of green so many things seemed to come in back in the 50's, it's beige, and it's marvelous. It weighs a ton it seems, but it works fantastically! It does one thing, (cue many teenagers gasping at the horror) it types. Because it's a type writer. Too many things nowadays do too many different things and altogether get to be extremely bothersome or annoying. To have something like a typewriter is a very welcomed change in it all. Granted, I am here writing about my typewriter on my computer, because I use my typewriter for things such as book revisions, and letters. (Plus, I doubt I would send out multiple...

Completion.

Completion. Complete. Whole. Full. Total. Finished. Done. Without a doubt.   50 thousand words!!!! I finished NaNoWriMo today. Quite honestly I have almost no clue what to do now. I say almost because I have only vaguest sense of the kind of idea I want to have in order to continue. Many would be horrified at these next words of--I'm no longer going to work without an outline. This doesn't mean that I won't have long times where I just write whatever I want without a plan, but for a full blown novel, I'm not going to work on one without have at least a very basic and bare bones idea of what I'm doing here. I used an outline, a very basic and weird, and altogether not very well written outline for Camp NaNoWriMo this past July. But what happened? I wrote 35 thousand words and finished ahead of schedule. With this in mind, I have no doubt that with how crazy my brilliant mind can be, with all of it's messy thoughts running around, all unruly and without...

Swits-nits-pits-lits-knits-Spritz

Spritz. I don't know why but I simply love the way the word sounds when I say it out loud. And then I'll end up going along a whole long list of words that I've made up to rhyme with it, something like this.  Spritz-witz-brits-nits-slits-skits-sits-lits-knits-bits-tritz-mits-nits-pits-bits-fitz-snits-wits-fits-rits-lits-brits-nits-swits-snits. All of that I said in my head as I was typing it out so there it a number of repititions in there! But still, it's all fun! Spritz. I bothered to look it up because the moment I actually said it, I went blank for a moment on what the word actually meant. Though I'd known for ages. Just one of those things you know? :)   Spritz: squirt or spray something at or onto something in quick short bursts.
